In the mid-1980s, there were already application examples of titanium alloy oil well pipes abroad. The United States Unocal Petroleum Company successfully applied Ti-3Al-8V-6Cr-4Mo-4Zr alloy pipe in the Salton Sea area, and the working temperature exceeded 300 ℃. Chevron Company improved the high-strength and heat-resistant Ti-6264 alloy for the aviation industry, developed 145 steel grade titanium alloy thermal recovery well casing, and used in more than 20 thermal recovery wells (temperature 260 ~ 290 ℃) in 2003. The RMI company and Chevron have also respectively applied titanium alloy tubing and tubing to some special oil and gas wells in Mobile Bay and the Gulf of Mexico with good results.
Torch Drilling Technology Service Company used titanium alloy drill pipes and steel drill pipes to drill short-radius horizontal wells in Greeley County, Kansas State in 1999. In 2000, they used titanium alloy drill pipes to complete 3 old wells in Ector inclination directional drilling, the directional well section is 8.5 m long, and the inclination angle is 66.5°~89. 5°. The British Bunting Company used titanium alloy to replace the carbon steel pipe part in a project, which successfully reduced the pipe quality by 80%, which not only effectively reduced the bearing capacity of the supporting members, but also improved the corrosion performance of the pipe.
The research and application of titanium alloy oil well pipe technology in China started relatively late compared to the United States, Russia and other countries, but after years of joint efforts by many research institutions, certain results have also been achieved. In July 2020, the domestic titanium alloy drill pipe developed by the Institute of Management Science and Engineering was successfully applied to the sidetracking operation of a 7,100 m deep and ultra-short radius horizontal well in the Western Oilfield. The inclination angle of the directional section is 77°, and the build-up rate is 20. 58°/30 m. Subsequently, the titanium alloy drill pipe developed by the Institute of Tube Research and Zhongshi Titanium successfully achieved ultra-short-radius horizontal well drilling at a depth of 1655 m in Well Yuan 29-5 of Yongle Oilfield, Daqing Oilfield, breaking the domestic field of ultra-short-radius horizontal well drilling. The record of drilling and drilling meets the design requirements, which provides technical support for the further development of shallow oil and gas wells in China, and also accumulates important experience for domestic titanium alloy oil well tube technology.
